Welcome to the New Year! Just as our new calendar on the wall is fresh and clean with open space, many of us feel compelled to clear out what no longer serves us and create fresh, clean open spaces in our homes. Decluttering can be a powerful way to begin — especially when it’s done with purpose.
That purpose matters here in San Diego. Before you throw out your No Longers, think about donating them instead. The City of San Diego reports that the Miramar Landfill processes roughly 910,000 tons of trash annually. Nationally, the average American sends about 4.4 pounds of trash per person per day — more than 1,600 pounds per year, to landfill. When we donate usable items thoughtfully, we help keep them out of landfills and circulating in our local community instead.

Where Do I Take This Stuff?
A common decluttering roadblock is simply not knowing where to take donations. Without a clear plan, bags sit in hallways, closets stay full, and good intentions stall. Clarity around where items will go often makes all the difference in moving forward.
While Salvation Army and Goodwill do important work and remain perfectly acceptable donation options, they are often not compelling for donors- especially those who are decluttering thoughtfully. For many people, these large, national organizations feel distant and impersonal. Once items are dropped off, donors rarely know where they end up, who benefits, or how the proceeds are used in their own community. The act of giving becomes transactional: drop the bag, check the box, move on.
That lack of emotional connection matters. When donating feels generic, it doesn’t always provide the internal motivation needed to part with your possessions, even if they are No Longer serving you. This is especially true for people who struggle with decluttering — if the destination feels vague, letting go feels harder.

By contrast, donating to a HeartBeat feels deeply satisfying because it connects generosity to purpose. A HeartBeat is a charity, cause, or organization that resonates personally with you. You can feel your heart beating with excitement when you think about supporting a cause that you care about.
When you give to an organization that resonates with your values or life experience, your donation carries a story. You can picture the impact:
- A rescued animal receiving care
- A senior receiving support
- A family finding stability
- A survivor being helped through recovery
While your belongings no longer serve you, they can serve someone else.
That emotional clarity creates momentum. People are more willing to release items when they know why they’re giving and who they’re helping. The donation process becomes an extension of compassion, not just a cleanup task. Instead of asking, “Where should I take this?” the question becomes, “Who would I love to support?
